I usually don’t have much time to read, so when I do, I try to take advantage of it. Below are some of the books that I have read, or am reading. If you read this and think there is a book I might like, feel free to let me know.
Currently: Mona In The Promised Land by Gish Jen. Although I’m finding the writing style a little choppy at times, I’m one third of the way through this book and am really enjoying it. I love Jen’s characters and sense of humor, especially the maverick philosophies and adventures of the protagonist, teenage Mona Chang. Like much of the Asian-American fiction I have read, the protagonist struggles with her thoughts and how she wants to make sense of her Asian (in this case, Chinese) and American lifestyles and philosophies. This journey is especially interesting as it is set in the late 60’s, which brings an exciting flavor to the work.
03-15-08: The Guy Not Taken – Stories by Jennifer Weiner. I love Jennifer Wiener’s work, many of which are about women in their thirties; many are new moms or mothers-to-be, or new wives who try to make sense out of where they are in their lives. Her characters are very realistic and comforting, you feel as if you know them. The book also has moments that are not only insightful, but humorous.
